Helping Americans Save on Home Energy Bills with EnergySavers.gov

In the early summer of 2005 Blue Iceberg was asked by the Partnerships for Home Energy Efficiency (PHEE), a joint effort of three federal agencies (the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) to develop a website at energysavers.gov., an information center that highlights ways to save money on home energy bills.

Blue Iceberg worked closely with groups from all three federal agencies to develop the interactive strategy, design the look and feel, develop the information architecture and to advise on content selection and development that met the needs of each agency. EnergySavers.gov provides information on energy-efficient products and building methods, as well as energy audits, resources, case studies, how-to's and other information useful to both consumers and providers. The content is conveniently segmented and targeted to the needs of Homeowners, Contractors & Builders, Building Managers, Realtors & Real Estate Professionals, and State Agencies.

Working on an accelerated timeframe, the site needed to launch by July 11, within a month of engagement, to coincide with joint announcement to the media by the scretaries of the three agencies. Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the resulting rise in energy prices, the Federal Government has stepped up its effort to help Americans reduce their dependence on foreign oil and to reduce the cost of home energy bills. In an address on September 26, President Bush directed fellow Americans to the EnergySavers.gov website, and the URL is featured both on the home page of the Department of Energy (DOE)'s website at www.energy.gov and on a banner hanging in front of the DOE building in Washington, DC.
